Wixon's Female Food Technologists Lead Workshops for Girls
Leda Strand, Wixon's Director of Technology Applications and Industrial Ingredients, led a sensory tasting workshop, and AnnMarie Kraszewski, Food Scientist, taught a class on snack formulation. "The girls really enjoyed the sensory tasting and making their own snacks," says Leda. "They were able to develop a seasoning, coat products, and then take home the snacks, along with the seasoning. A few of the girls asked if we were going to be there next year!" Roni Eckert, Research Scientist, and Lisa Huzjak, R&D Executive Assistant, also assisted. |
Wixon's female food scientists recently led workshops during a day-long seminar designed to peak girls' interest in science, technology, and engineering. Held Saturday, May 7, at the University of Wisconsin - Waukesha campus, 80 girls between the ages of 11 and 14 participated in the Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science (GEMS) event. GEMS offered 17 different classes ranging from robotics, criminology, veterinary science, food science, astronomy, electricity, computer science, biology, biomedical engineering, finances, and dentistry.
